Counselor to the President of the Russian Federation expressed interest in UAV for environmental protection

On June, 19 RPA 'Typhoon' in association with UAV Systems Group (unmanned.ru) demonstrated the automobile radiological detection laboratory for Counselor to the President of the Russian Federation for climate change Aleksander Bedritskiy.

Produced by RPA 'Typhoon' devices are attached to the UAV Supercam-Aerogamma S, developed on the base of UAV Supercam and updated by UAV Systems Group engineers to increase UAV payload capacity and possibility to perform different tasks for environmental protection.

This system allows to perform gamma spectral surveying to detect radioactive contamination in the environment and to assess the snow depth, including in remote and hard-to-reach areas. The survey is performed in the automatic mode, the data from the UAV are transmitted to the ground control station. This allows to assess the situation in real time and take prompt measures in case of emergency. Along with transmission all the data are saved to the hard disk for the post processing.

During the flights UAV main technical specifications were demonstrated. According to Aleksander Bedritskiy, piloted helicopters were formerly used to monitor background radiation. UAV has many advantages: competitive cost, lower maintenance costs, UAV complex mobility and its environmental friendliness. Moreover, UAV allows to perform monitoring on a regular basis.

RPA 'Typhoon' and UAV Systems Group are planning to continue partnership in development of the system for environmental protection. Engineers are planning to develop high-resolution spectrometer to perform UAV spectral survey. This system will allow to monitor snowmelt, floodwater and flooding areas.
